Definitions

             

* Note: The Greek word “calathos” means "a cup" which may refer to the shape of the flower.

* Stem: Floats on ponds or creeps in the mud, roots at the nodes.

* Flower: Small white or sometimes pinkish with a straight-beaked cluster of seeds.

* Leaves: Rounded, with blunt teeth.

* Habitat: Edges of ponds, lakes, ditches, mud, and slow-moving streams.

* Caution: Do not eat any Caltha species raw. The known toxins can be removed through boiling.
